Be sure to be aware of the various types of inspections available. Radon, mold, etc. In Florida, buyers should also commission a Chinese drywall inspection. Not many buyers have heard of this, but it is very important!

If my misery helps even one person avoid a bad situation then this post was well worth writing. We too had some bad experiences with a rental house. Can you say direct hit lightning strike? Oh my, that’s another blog post in the making. Thanks for the idea.

Hm– I feel like I should print this list out and keep it with me until Brett and I decide to take the plunge and buy a house. It’s a shame that you had to experience all of this crap (sort of reminds me of the movie “The Money Pit”), but at least you’re sharing your experience to help others who have no clue about this stuff.

We sort of got a taste for this when we decided to rent a house– the exterior was adorable, the interior– a hot mess. I feel so bad for the person who buys this house someday and has to fix all of the stuff that’s wrong with it just to make it more efficient!
